Description
My Illo entry for the Reverse Big Bang at the LH comunity in Livejournal.
I went for my favourite festivity, Saint John’s Day, knowns as San Juan Ára in Paraguay, and Festa Junina in Brazil.
In the borders of those countries, the “brasiguayan” comunities usually make it into one big celebration that mixes both their cultures, costumes, traditional food, dances, and games.
It is my favourite party, and I can assure you, there is nothing more hilarous than seeing the play of Casamiento Koguá- it means “forced marriage”, presented in a mix of spanish, portuguese and guarani (a native language, official in Paraguay) at the goddamn very same time.
You also see Caipiras and Kambas. Caipiras are brazilian, they’re honestly very festive and funny and like dancing and getting drunk (so many sweet alcohol beverages in Festas Juninas why u so tasty) ; while Kambas are paraguayan and are just as funny but more mischievous and like setting things on fire and run around with it, being it scarecrows they hanged on a stick or a tree, fireworks (sometimes they put fireworks inside the scarecrow to make it explode), play soccer with balls (that they set on fire, of course), and scare people.
Then there’s the Toro Candil (the Fire Bull), which is a large bull skull with its horns on fire. People (usually kambas what a surprise!) disguise as Toro Candil- two guys under a mantle of leather, holding the skull on a stick- to run around with it, chasing little children and other kambas.
Here, I gave my Toro Candil a more centaur-vibe I think. Mostly cos when I made the sketches for this illo, my first idea was that the Fire Bull was a kamba in disguise.
My illo is about a sweet, poor Caipira stuck with the Toro Candil’s bratty little brothers.
